Overview
Mount Meru, standing at 4,562 meters (14,968 ft) within Arusha National Park, is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and the fifth-highest in Africa. This 4-Day Momella Route itinerary is an exceptional trek on its own, offering dramatic landscapes and a thrilling crater rim walk. It also serves as the absolute best acclimatization trek before tackling Mount Kilimanjaro. The journey features a unique combination of a walking wildlife safari on the lower slopes—where you hike alongside an armed park ranger near buffaloes, giraffes, and zebras—and a classic, steep mountain climb leading to Socialist Peak.
Highlights
- Wildlife Walking Safari: Hike safely alongside an armed park ranger through lower forests filled with buffaloes, giraffes, and monkeys.
- Hut Accommodation: Sleep comfortably in sturdy wooden cabins (Miriakamba and Saddle Huts) equipped with solar lighting.
- Stunning Kilimanjaro Views: Experience a breathtaking sunrise over the clouds with Mount Kilimanjaro perfectly visible in the east.
- The Dramatic Crater Rim: Challenge yourself on a thrilling, narrow ridge walk around the spectacular volcanic ash cone.
