坦桑尼亚野生动物园和乞力马扎罗山攀登小费指南

Tipping is a deeply ingrained custom in Tanzania’s tourism industry. While it is entirely voluntary and should always reflect the quality of service you receive, tips form a significant part of the income for safari guides, camp chefs, and Kilimanjaro mountain crews.

Budgeting for tips in advance ensures your local crew is fairly compensated for their hard physical labor, expertise, and dedication to keeping you safe. This guide provides clear, industry-standard benchmarks for both the savanna and the mountain.

1. Important Currency Rules for Tipping

Before looking at the amounts, you must understand how cash works in East Africa. If you bring the wrong type of cash, your crew will not be able to use or exchange it locally.

  • US Dollars (USD) or Tanzanian Shillings (TZS): Both are widely accepted. However, if you are tipping in USD, the bills must be crisp, clean, and un-torn.
  • The 2013 Bill Rule: Tanzanian banks and exchange bureaus do not accept US dollar bills that were printed before the year 2013. Always check the series date printed on your bills before leaving home.
  • No Coins for Foreign Currency: Never tip your crew using foreign coins (like US quarters or Euro coins). Local banks do not exchange foreign coins, rendering them useless. Use bills only, or convert them into Tanzanian Shillings first.

2. Tanzania Wildlife Safari Tipping Rates

On a safari, your driver-guide is your host, mechanic, and wildlife tracker all in one. If you are on a camping or mid-range safari, you will also have a safari chef traveling with you to prepare fresh meals in the bush.

Safari tips are customarly given at the very end of your safari trip, rather than daily.

Crew Member Role Recommended Daily Tip (Per Group) Operational Notes
Lead Driver-Guide $20 to $30 / day Hand directly to the guide at the end of the itinerary.
Safari Chef (Camping Trips) $15 to $20 / day Essential for mobile camping or budget itineraries.
Walking Safari Armed Ranger $20 / walk Paid immediately after the bush walk concludes.
General Lodge / Camp Staff $10 to $15 / day Place this in the communal “Staff Tip Box” at reception.

Group Dynamics Tip: Note that safari guide and chef tips are calculated per group, not per traveler. If four friends are sharing one 4×4 safari vehicle, they divide the $20–$30 daily guide tip among themselves.

3. Mount Kilimanjaro Trekking Tipping Standards

Tipping on Mount Kilimanjaro is highly structured. Because high-altitude trekking requires massive logistical support, you will be accompanied by a large support team. For example, a standard group of just two climbers typically requires a crew of 9 to 11 people (including a lead guide, assistant guide, cook, and multiple porters).

The Kilimanjaro Tipping Ceremony happens on the final morning at the park gate (such as Mweka or Marangu Gate) after you have safely descended. The amounts below are calculated per crew member, per day from the entire climbing group:

1.Tip the Lead Guide:Step 1.

The director of your mountain safety. The standard rate is $20 to $25 per day from the group.

2.Tip Assistant Guides & Chefs:Step 2.

Assistant guides track your health metrics, and mountain chefs cook high-calorie meals at altitude. The standard rate is $15 to $20 per day per assistant/chef from the group.

3.Tip the Porters:Step 3.

Porters carry the heavy gear, pitch the tents, and fetch water in freezing weather. The standard rate is $8 to $10 per day per porter from the group.

The Ethical Distribution Rule

To ensure transparency and prevent any senior staff from unfairly claiming tips meant for the porters, experienced operators recommend using the envelope system.

Before the tipping ceremony, gather your group, calculate the total for each individual crew member based on the days climbed, write their name on a separate envelope, and place the cash inside. Hand each envelope directly to that specific crew member during the farewell song-and-dance celebration. This guarantees that 100% of your gratuity goes directly into the hands of the person who earned it.
